Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is a Canadian and American citizen who works as an advocate for Sikh Rights. Born in Khanot village, Amritsar, he is the son of a former Punjab State Agricultural Marketing Board employee, Mahinder Singh.
In his capacity as an attorney and the legal advisor for Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), he has brought attention to matters that impact the Sikh community all over the world. Pannun, a human rights activist and lawyer, has been outspoken in his attempts to address issues surrounding the Sikh diaspora. Under Pannun’s direction, Sikhs for Justice has engaged in campaigns and legal actions to draw attention to purported human rights abuses and discrimination that Sikhs are subjected to globally.
Pannun’s advocacy, the call for Khalistan and the Referendum 2020 campaign, has been met with controversy and opposition from various quarters. The pursuit of an independent state has been a source of debate within and outside the Sikh community. Financial times reported that the US has foiled the plan of Gurpatwann Singh Pannu’s assassination on American soil.
